Waverley and Guildford Borough Councils suspend collections of fridges and freezers

Waverley and Guildford Borough Councils have announced the suspension of fridge and freezer collections from homes as part of our bulky waste collection service.

​

The suspension comes at a time when there is a national shortage of capacity to treat and recycle fridges and freezers. Across the country, there are a small network of facilities that can treat fridges and freezers, which has recently been hit by multiple operational issues. These include a processor going into liquidation, a series of fires at treatment facilities and increased demand on facilities due to recent hot weather.

As there are currently fewer treatment facilities for fridges and freezers, space at Surrey's waste disposal sites has become limited. This has led to Suez, which operates the sites on behalf of Surrey County Council, temporarily restricting the delivery of fridges and freezers from Surrey's district and borough councils.

This step has been taken alongside various other local authorities across England, which have experienced the same issues.

We hope that the situation will be resolved in the coming weeks and will communicate when services resume.

Current fridge and freezer disposal advice for Waverley and Guildford residents

• If you're buying a new fridge or freezer, many retailers offer a takeback service, through which they remove your existing fridge or freezer at the same time as delivering your new one.

• You can still take fridges and freezers to any of Surrey's community recycling centres.

​

If you cannot do any of the above, please store your fridge or freezer safely at home until services resume.

If you have already booked your collection we will be contacting you shortly with options to have a refund or simply postpone your collection until services are resumed.
